- Heather A. Carlson of University of Michigan in Ann Arbor was selected
as the
2008 Corwin Hansch Award recipient. This award recognizes the work of a young investigator in QSAR and
modeling with
the expectation that she or he will continue to advance the field for many years to come.
-
- Dr. Carlson's main contributions are the incorporation of protein
flexibility into virtual screening and the creation of the Binding MOAD database of well-resolved ligand-protein structures annotated with
experimentally determined binding data.
She applies the techniques of computational
chemistry to the problems of molecular recognition between ligands and
proteins, ranging from fundamental biophysics to the design of inhibitors of
HIV-1 protease, dihydrofolate reductase, p53-MDM22, and beta-secretase.
-
Dr. Carlson
serves on the editorial boards of the journals Proteins: Structure,
Function, and Bioinformatics and Chemical Biology and Drug Design, and was an associate editor of Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics and Annual
Reports in Computational Chemistry produced by the ACS COMP division.
